The reputation of El Médano as being a world-class all-year-round watersports destination has come about from an extremely consistent northeast trade wind named “Alisios” which allows 365 days of cross-onshore conditions suited for beginners towards pro-athletes. When checking wind forecasts for the area, a key tip is to add 5 - 10 knots on whatever Windguru is predicting when in a north-easterly direction, as the wind accelerates around the huge volcano of Mount Teide.
The most accurate forecast is the one from windy.com. The entire bay can be transformed into a freestyle paradise through the arrival of southerly winds, these can also be a lot stronger than what is forecasted. This combined with air temperatures that go almost never above 32 degrees and not below 20 degrees, even in winter time makes El Médano the perfect watersports holiday destination.
As the South Bay can be a bit challenging for newcomers to wing foiling and windsurfing, we’ve set up a mobile wing foil and windsurf school at Granadilla Harbour, just a quick 10-minute drive from our main water sports school. Here, beginners can practice in calm conditions with ample space, side-shore wind, and flat water. Starting at this location has proven to be very effective for making quick progress, as it offers ideal conditions for learners. Once you've mastered the basics and can ride confidently and independently here, you’ll be ready for the choppier and wavier conditions in the South Bay. The combination of these two spots prepares our students for a wide range of conditions, making them solid intermediate wing foilers and windsurfers, ready to surf at almost any other spot in the world.
